It does drag at times in the middle and Gavan O'Herlihy's acting does come across as awkward.
It's not a gem, but in no way is it a disgrace. Fortunately, The Secret Adversary does work as an adaptation and on its own. Not all adaptations of her work has been great mind, seen with Austin Trevor's Lord Edgware Dies, The Alphabet Murders, the 1989 version of Ten Little Indians and Alfred Molina's Murder on the Orient Express, the worst of the Geraldine McEwan Marple adaptations were similarly hard to sit through. On films and TV, there have been some real gems, like with the Russian and 1945 versions of And Then There Were None, Witness for the Prosecution, Sidney Lumet's Murder on the Orient Express, the Peter Ustinov films of Death on the Nile and Evil Under the Sun and most of the Joan Hickson Miss Marple and David Suchet Poirot adaptations. Here they launch their unique business venture, Young Adventurers Ltd, in hope of finding excitement and reward but quickly find themselves neck-deep in international intrigue and pitted against an elusive criminal mastermind.I'd see anything adapted from Agatha Christie, as I love her books and writing style. The Secret Adversary by Agatha Christie is the first appearance of the author's adventurous, mystery-solving duo, Tommy Beresford and Prudence "Tuppence" Cowley. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of The Secret Adversary is both modern and readable. Although overshadowed by Christie's better known sleuths, Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, Tommy and Tuppence were her favorite creations and her enthusiasm for the couple and their adventures is transparent on the page. Appearing as silent movie in 1928 this was the first of the author's novels to be made into a film. The novel first appeared in 1922 and was greeted by reviews marveling at the author's masterful concealment of the villain's identity, some going as far as to say that unless the reader peeked at the final few pages there was no way to know it, making this a truly secret adversary. Careful investigation reveals connections between a missing survivor of the torpedoed Lusitania, documents highly compromising to the British government and a potentially catastrophic plot masterminded by a very dangerous man whose identity is known to no one living. Tommy Beresford and "Tuppence" Cowley's new firm, Young Adventurers Ltd opens for business only to have their first customer drop out of sight at the mere mention of a name. Behind the plot is a formidable foe, a mysterious figure whose identity seems impossible to determine and whose plans include murder. Agatha Christie's deft skill in plotting is on full display in the first adventure of Tommy and Tuppence, with seemingly disconnected events revealing a complex web of intrigue.
